Gallic acid, also known as Gallic acid or Gallic acid, is an organic acid found in gallnut, witch hazel, sumac, oak bark, and tea. Chemical formula C6H2(OH)3COOH. Gallic acid is soluble in water, alcohol and ether; It has the properties of phenol (easy to be oxidized and form blue-black precipitation with ferric chloride solution) and carboxylic acid (lose the coking gallic acid of carbon dioxide when heated). Gallic acid is used as a developer and its basic bismuth salts are used as preservatives and are commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry. It is the raw material for the manufacture of mescaline, a hallucinogen.
Has the antibacterial action, may treat the bacterium dysentery. It has the functions of convergence, hemostasis and antidiarrheal. Can be used as a preservative. Pyrogallic acid, drugs, inks, media dyes and explosion-proof agents can be prepared. It is also used as a developing agent and analytical reagent for the detection of free inorganic acids, dihydroxyacetone, alkaloids and metals.
