p-Toluic acid (4-methylbenzoic acid) is a substituted benzoic acid with the formula CH3C6H4COOH. It is an intermediate in some industrial processes for the oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid which is used in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate. It is a white crystalline solid that is practically insoluble in water, but soluble in acetone.

Production methods

1. It is prepared by catalytic oxidation of p-xylene with air. When the atmospheric pressure method is adopted, xylene and cobalt naphthenate can be added to the reaction pot. When heated to 90ºC, the air will start to flow into the pot. The temperature is controlled at 110-115ºC. Cool to room temperature, filter, filter cake washed with paraxylene, dry to obtain parmethylbenzoic acid. And paraxylene is recycled. Yield of 30-40%. When the pressurized oxidation method was used, the reaction temperature was 125ºC, the air flow was 250L for 1h and the reaction was 6h at a pressure of 0.25MPa. The unreacted xylene was then distilled by steam and the oxidizing material was acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid to a pH of 2. Stir to cool and filter. The filter cake was soaked with paraxylene and then filtered. The content of paraxylene was above 96%, the one-way conversion rate of paraxylene was 40%, and the yield was 60-70%.
2. It is prepared by oxidation of p-isopropyl toluene with nitric acid. 20% nitric acid was mixed with p-isopropyl toluene, stirred and heated to 80-90ºC for 4h, then heated to 90-95ºC for 6h. The cake was cooled, filtered, and recrystallized with toluene to obtain p-methylbenzoic acid with a yield of 50-53%. In addition, p-xylene was oxidized with concentrated nitric acid for 30h, and the yield was 58%.
