Description
Sodium Sodium, white scales or powder, odorless, pinkish in exposed light.Soluble in water, glycerin, insoluble in ether, chloroform, benzene and other organic solvents.Fire is combustible in case of fire.Mainly used for pain relievers and rheumatic drugs, also used in organic synthesis.It can be obtained by neutralizing crystallization of salicylic acid with base.
Application
It is used in medicine as an analgesic and antipyretic.
Sodium salicylate also acts as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and induces apoptosis in cancer cells and also necrosis.
It is also a potential replacement for aspirin for people sensitive to it.
It may also be used as a phosphor for the detection of vacuum ultraviolet radiation and electrons.
