General introduction and Generation of Tetrahydrofuran THF CAS 109-99-9

1. A colorless transparent liquid with an ether-like smell. Miscible with water. The azeotropic mixture with water can dissolve alkaloids such as cellulose acetate and caffeine, and the solubility is better than that of tetrahydrofuran alone. General organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, etc. can dissolve well in tetrahydrofuran. Easily combine with oxidation in the air to form explosive peroxides. It is non-corrosive to metals, and corrosive to many plastics and rubbers. Due to the low boiling point and flash point, it is easy to catch fire at room temperature. Oxygen in the air can react with tetrahydrofuran to generate explosive peroxides during storage. Under light and anhydrous conditions, peroxides are more likely to form. Therefore, 0.05% to 1% of reducing substances such as hydroquinone, resorcinol, p-cresol or ferrous salts are often added as antioxidants to inhibit the generation of peroxides. This product is low in toxicity, and operators should wear protective gear.

 

2. Chemical properties: Explosive peroxides are generated in the air due to auto-oxidation. Succinic acid is formed when oxidized with nitric acid. Under the catalysis of alumina, it can react with ammonia at 300~400℃ to obtain pyrrolidine; react with hydrogen sulfide at 400℃ to obtain tetrahydrothiophene. In the presence of zinc chloride, under the action of acid or acid chloride, it is easy to open the ring to generate 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-dihalide. Under the influence of light, chlorination at room temperature produces 2,3-dichlorotetrahydrofuran. The second chlorine atom is very active and can be directly substituted by an alkoxy group, an acetoxy group or an alkyl group of Grignard reagent. Using acid phosphate as a catalyst, tetrahydrofuran is dehydrated to butadiene at 270°C. When heated, tetrahydrofuran reacts with hydrogen chloride gas to rearrange into 4-chlorobutanol. In the presence of aluminum trichloride, tetrahydrofuran reacts with lithium aluminum hydride to quantitatively generate butanol.
