N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (CAS 134-62-3), abbreviated as DEET, is a chemical agent made of diethyl and methylbenzoic acid, or acid chloride and ethylamine. The chemical formula is C12H17NO, which is a colorless or light yellow liquid at room temperature.

The mosquito repellent principle of DEET is that the liquid volatilizes on the skin, blocking the 1-octene-3-ol of the insect olfactory receptor, and making the mosquitoes feel uncomfortable and effective.
